A Gospel Art Blog

Hi, my name is Joshua Cotton. Welcome to the Illuminators' Workshop.

Long ago, before the internet, before TV, before even the printing press, monks toiled in monasteries to duplicate books by hand. They immersed themselves in the scriptures, copying the stories over and over again. However, these men did more than just copy. They glorified the text with beautiful artwork, mingled among the words and brimming from the margins. More than scribes, these men brought new light to the text. They became known as "limners", or "illuminators". In the past this name has applied only to those who practice the accent art of creating illuminated manuscripts. However, I believe that our world today needs "illumination" through art in every medium, and and more than it ever has. Jesus Christ said, referring to his disciples, "Ye are the light of the world...Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven"(Matthew 5:14-16). I believe that God gives us gifts and desires for a reason, and that reason is to bring increased light to the world. Do you have an artistic gift? Do you have a desire to use it to do good? Then let your light so shine through your brush, voice, instrument, word processor. You are the light of the Savior in the world. You are an illuminator.
